"Almost
Famous"
For
a follow up to "Jerry Maguire," writer director Cameron
Crowe went back through his own life and delivers a touching
comical look at going on a road trip with an up and coming
rock band in the 1970's.
"Almost Famous" tells the based on a true story, story of
a fifteen year old kid who loves rock and roll and wants to
make a living writing about it. He gets a chance from Rolling
Stone magazine to write a story about a band named Stillwater.
Stillwater consists of lead guitarist Billy Crudup, lead singer
Jason Lee along with two other members.
As in most movies about bands, you see them go through the
ups and downs and petty jealousies that threaten the chances
of success. Crowe's story pulls you in and makes you feel
like you are William Miller the fifteen year old writer living
his dream on the bus with the band. You end up caring about
what he cares about and you get protective of the character.
But the person who steals the show and has the makings of
becoming a huge star is Kate Hudson. Hudson who up until now
has been know as the daughter of Goldie Hawn, breaks out on
her own as Penny Lane a groupie who is in love with Crudups
character. She has a great screen presence and could end up
with some nominations come awards season.
Music runs through Crowe's veins and it runs through his movie
as well. Bottom line is that this is a story we have all seen
before but this time it has heart and soul and feelings. "Almost
Famous" is almost perfect.
