"Cast Away"

By Ted Pfeifer

You will be blown away by "CAST AWAY". Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis and another notch to their belts by delivering an out and out amazing piece of work. Tom Hanks plays the role of Chuck Noland, a FedEx efficiency expert, who is worried about one thing. The one thing is time, always be on time, always know what time it is and always have time to get the job done. He is paged during Christmas dinner and must hop on a plane for work, but before he does he gives his girlfriend, played by Helen Hunt, a tiny box for her present, he explains that he wishes he could see her open it in a different setting. She tells him that she will wait until he gets back.

He then speaks those ill-fated movie words "I’ll be right back". As the plane crashes we move into a completely different film experience than anything in recent memory. Hanks lands on a deserted island and must learn how to stay alive. He goes through various stages physically, emotionally and mentally. For about an hour and a half all you have is Tom Hanks and island and the sounds of nature. Zemeckis makes it so you are on the island along with Hanks. You hear what he hears and feel what he feels. There is humor, sadness, tension and introspection.

Hanks proves that he is one of the top actors of our time. He acts with his whole being and is not afraid to take chances. One thing that is truly amazing is that Zemeckis started filming "Cast Away" and the took time off so Hanks could go through his physical changes. While on his break he went and directed Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer in a Hitchcockian thriller which went on to great success at the Box office. "Cast Away" is easily on of the years Top 10 Movies. And Tom Hanks deserves an Oscar nomination and possibly another statue.
