"The Mummy" Dig it up.

By Ted Pfeifer

"The Mummy" starts out dark and sinister as it shows us the why and how the Mummy was created. Then the movie gets a little campy. This is when we are introduced to Rick O'Connell played by Brendan Fraser.

Fraser who has played co-star to Pauly Shore in "Encino Man" and then starred in the big hit "George of the Jungle" and onto a critically acclaimed role in "Gods & Monsters", uses all of his acting styles in this movie. One minute the movie is a goofy, funny spoof, the next it is a down right scary horror picture. That is what kind of makes the movie work.

It works on many different levels, on purpose I don't know. Fraser is an Indiana Jones want to be who finds an ancient map to the lost city of Hamunaptra where, as the legend goes, the city is filled with great riches, along with terrible danger, He meets up with Rachel Weisz playing an Egyptologist, and her greedy brother. In exchange for saving his life he agrees to take them to the lost city. On the way they are met by another group of adventurers looking for the treasure.

All of this is a nice set up, but the fun really starts when the Mummy is brought back to life. It is done in stages and this is where the special effects really kick in. The Mummy goes on a search to kill those who have awakened him and by doing so he becomes flesh and blood. He is also chasing after Weisz as he wants to sacrifice her to bring back his lost love. It is worth seeing just for the special effects. And of course the "MUMMY 2" is on its way starring the original cast along with the WWF's The Rock.
