It is very hard to give "The Scorpion King" a bad review. It makes it extremely clear from minute one of the film that this is going to be campy, crazy fun.

"The Scorpion King" is set 5000 years ago in the city of Gomorrah, where an evil ruler named Memnon is going through and killing all the people of the land. With only a few tribes left they have only one option, that option is to hire an assassin to kill Memnon's sorcerer.

The assassin is Mathayus aka The Scorpion King played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. This is the wrestling worlds top dog's first starring role. This is of course a spin off from the film "The Mummy Returns" in which Johnson also appeared.

Once on the road to kill the sorcerer Mathayus makes his way with his brother to Memnon's village. After a bloody fight Mathayus gets to the sorcerer room and he discovers that she is an extremely beautiful woman. He name is Cassandra, played by Kelly Hu, and Mathayus can't kill her.

From that point on the movie is really just a one trick pony. Fights, poses and a journey of revenge is all that remains. Stephen Sommers who directed "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns" wrote the screenplay as he tries to keep his franchise going. And there really isn't much to it. You can tell that the film was written for Johnson to star and I couldn't really picture anyone else in the role.

Chuck Russell directed the film and he has done better work in the past, for example, "The Mask" and "Eraser". The thing that he does do is he lets us in on the fact that this is not to be taken seriously and that is why I say if you take it for what it is you will enjoy it. If you are looking for a movie that is equal or surpasses either of "The Mummy" movies than you will be disappointed.

"The Rock" delivers a fine performance and has a great screen presence, I would say that audiences should get used to seeing him. He uses his charm in a way that pulls you into the character and makes you feel comfortable. He doesn't give off the impression that he is trying to stretch as an actor, you just get the feeling that he is having fun doing what he is doing and trying his best. If you are a fan of "The Rock" than you know that he often does what he calls "The People's Eyebrow" and yes for you wrestling fans, he does do it in the movie. It got the biggest charge out of the audience I was with.

Kelly Hu as Cassandra is sexy and sweet, Steven Brand who plays Memnon is basically Russell Crowe lite from "Gladiator" and Michael Clarke Duncan also does well with what he was given.

There are major plot holes and problems with consistency in the Mathayus character, there is no real reason for the film to be called "The Scorpion King" because there is little reference to Mathayus becoming the Scorpion King.

What matters most is if it delivers as a part of "The Mummy" franchise and I say yes. It is not a good as the others but I am sure we will see a sequel to "The Scorpion King"..
