"Stuart
Little 2," written by E. B. White(book) and Douglas Wick(film
story) and directed by Rob Minkoff, is the latest animated
feature from Columbia Picture Corporation and is the second
of two movies depicting the exploits of the charming and adventurous
mouse adopted into the Little family by parents; Eleanor and
Fredrick Little(Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie).
The
story begins as the morning sun rises on the Little family,
a seemingly normal suburban family. Stuart Little(voice by
Michael J. Fox), the little, mouse brother to George Little(Jonathan
Lipnicki) wakes in his small bedroom situated on the top bunk
of a bunkbed. He gets dressed and slides down a thin rope
to George's bed offering George his glasses and reminding
him that a soccer game is scheduled for the day. Later that
day, Stuart sits in the cockpit of a model airplane that George
is building pretending to be the pilot. George's friend Will(Marc
John Jeffries) arrives and George is distracted. Stuart accidentally
starts the engine and after several near misses flies the
plane out of the house only to crash it in a local park. This
confirms to his overprotective mother that Stuart shouldn't
leave her sight. Fredrick sees that Stuart is depressed that
George is angry and that he doesn't have a friend of his own.
Fredrick sits down with Stuart and proceeds to have a father
and son talk where Fredrick tries to comfort him by telling
him to look for the "silver lining" that will appear in any
bad situation. Stuart agrees and the next day he asks several
of the boys in his class to spend time with him. All have
excuses, so he drives home in his model, convertible car.
As he tries to think of the "silver lining" in this event
a yellow canary falls into the passenger side seat of his
car. Taken aback by her appearance and realizing she is injured,
Stuart speeds for home. Awaken by the feverish driving, the
canary tells him to watch out for the falcon that had been
chasing her. At that moment the falcon arrives and chases
the two until they lose him in an alley. Stuart takes this
new friend Margalo(voice by Melanie Griffith) home to help
her heal. They are greeted by the Little's cat Snowball(voice
by Nathan Lane), who is afraid of everything.
The
adventure continues as the audience learns that Margalo has
been working for Falcon(James Woods) by pretending to be hurt
then stealing the valuables that belong to the humans. She
gets Eleanor's wedding ring and takes off. Stuart is devastated
by this loss, but believes she wouldn't have left on her own
and that Falcon must have taken her. Stuart blackmails Snowball
by telling him that he will have George tell his parents that
Snowball ate him. Angry, but realizing there is nothing left
to do, Snowball follows Stuart who is in his car as they travel
through the streets looking for Margalo. Stuart makes one
stop to call his brother, George, to tell George that he needs
George to cover for him. With the help of his friend Will,
George lies to his parents by telling them he had been at
soccer practice, then at a school play rehearsal. Eventually
the Little's find out what happened and the three go looking
for Stuart.
After
his car blows an engine, Stuart and Snowball continue their
journey and come across an alley cat called Monty(voice by
Steve Zahn), who informs them that Falcon's lair is at the
top of the Pushkin Building, a local office building. Stuart
leaves Snowball on the side walk and climbs his way to the
top where he finds Margalo. To his dismay finds out that she
has been working with Falcon all the time. In a quick fight,
Stuart is pitched off the building. Snowball realizes that
something must be wrong and, although afraid of heights, goes
after Stuart.
Margalo informs Snowball that Stuart is dead, not realizing
that he had landed in a garbage truck that deposited it's
trash onto a garbage barge that is heading out to see. Thinking
quickly, Stuart looks for some way to return to shore and
finds the broken plane he had crashed earlier. Seeing this
as his "silver lining" and by using his wits, he repairs the
plane and returns to the Pushkin Building where he continues
the fight eventually beating Falcon and being reunited with
his family. In the end, Margalo is free to follow her dream
by flying with the other birds south.
This
viewer found "Stuart Little 2" to be a positive and entertaining
movie and found Stuart(Michael J. Fox) charming. The chemistry
between all the cast members was easily seen. All the actors
read their lines as though they were having fun doing this
movie and that feeling spilled over into the audience and
made it fun for everyone present. It was interesting to watch
how easily the human actors related to the empty space that
later was filled with the animated mouse, Stuart.
The
moral of the story, aimed at the children in the audience,
"You are as big as you feel," is a positive and simple statement
that children of all ages can grasp.
