As I sit here in my Spider-Man costume that I wore last Halloween I have to admit that sometimes Hollywood hits it right on the head by casting the right people in the right roles. And my oh my have they done a bang up job with "Spider-Man"

Tobey Maguire IS Peter Parker and Tobey Maguire IS Spider-Man. It is an amazing transformation that Maguire goes through when his character Peter Parker is bitten by a genetic freak of a spider. It is all in his eyes, you experience the wonderment with him as he becomes this all-time favorite super hero.

A line in the movie is delivered by Peter's Uncle Ben, played by Cliff Robertson and the line is as follows..."With great power comes great responsibility" and that line is used throughout the film but to me most importantly it was what was given to director Sam Raimi.

Sam Raimi is know for his "Evil Dead" trilogy, the film "Darkman" and the acclaimed film "A Simple Plan" and after seeing "Darkman" you know why he was the perfect choice to take on a huge franchise to be such as "Spider-Man"

The movie is really a love story with great action built around it. It has a soft core at its center and really pulls you in with the emotion of the film. It reminded me of the first "Batman" in which you find out how and why Bruce Wayne became the way he was. Much in the same way we go on this journey with Peter Parker and learn what makes him do what he does, whether it is fighting crime or becoming detached to the people he loves.

Tobey Maguire was the perfect choice because the character is someone who is just a regular guy with simple dreams and a crush on a girl he has known all his life but is afraid to tell her. Kirsten Dunst plays Mary Jane "MJ" Watson and brings her talents to the table not only with her beauty but by giving us a look into what demons she has to deal with.

Speaking of demons, the movies bad guy is The Green Goblin played with just enough over the top zeal needed by the brilliant Willem Dafoe. The change from good guy hard working scientist to lunatic in green is believable and terrifying. His son is played by James Franco and is Peter's roommate and only friend.

As most of us know the film was pushed back due to the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, and with dignity the filmmakers treat New York with the honor it deserves.

"Spider-man" is everything you could ask for. It is a big budget, comic book hero, summer popcorn, action flick with a solid love story thrown in for good measure. If you are planning on going to see this film, I suggest you arrive early and get ready for one hell of a good time.
