'The Cell' It's No Silence of the Lambs.

By Ted Pfeifer

This is not "Silence of the Lambs" or "Seven". Okay, I got that out of the way. "The Cell" is a new movie by music video director Tarsem. Tarsem should probably stick to videos. Jennifer Lopez stars as a scientist who works for a company that has developed a way to get into other people's minds to try and communicate.

It is used at the beginning with her trying to bring a young boy out of a coma. But when serial killer Vincent D'Onofrio falls into a coma with one remaining living for now victim, Lopez must use this technology to try and find the victims location. Got that? Vince Vaughn plays the FBI agent on the case and he is there for a semi-relationship with Lopez.

The movie starts out fairly strong as we see the killer in action. You do begin to get the feeling that you will be watching a movie in the same vein as "Seven" and "Silence of the Lambs" but Tarsem gets so caught up in his visuals that you lose the humanity of it all. While watching the other two films you felt them in a way that you don't normally feel, because they were real, you could see killers like this being out there in the world.

With this movie you get caught up and then lost and then caught up and then lost again. You so want this to be a good creepy serial killer film but it just doesn't do it. Parents do not let you children see this due to highly graphic scenes that will most likely make any person squirm in their seats much less kids. The plusses are visuals, intensity at parts and the hotness of Jennifer Lopez, the minuses are the direction and the inability to keep the intensity going throughout the whole film. Catch it during the matinee.
