The One, starring Jet Li and directed by James Wong (who also directed Final Destination) starts out with a very interesting introduction to the multiverse, a series of parrellel universes where each of us has a counterpart, in one of 124 universes. It is against the law to travel to the throughout the multiverse and there are Multiverse Agents, who monitor any illegal multiverse travel to protect the balance. (Yes Time Cop came to my mind also !)

Taking a page from the Highlander series, when one being from the multiverse dies, his/her power is distributed to the rest. We are introduced to the first of two versions of Jet Li , Yulaw, an ex-multiverse agent who has gone bad , going through the multiverse and killing all of his counterparts to become the supreme being known as The One. The only thing in Yulaw's way is Gabe, the good Jet Li, who lives in our Earth. Yulaw is being chased by two multivesrse agents, one being Yulaw's ex-partner. Delroy Lindo plays the ex-partner and Jason Statham (who I thought was playing the same role he had in John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars). So, not a bad start huh ?

The problem with film, is for being a Jet Li film, it's not. There are not that many fights or confrontations you see is a usual action fim of this nature, let alone a Jet Li film.. When there is a fight or Yulaw/Gabe do something with there "supreme" powers, it a special-effects over drenched mess. Why does Jet Li need to be enhanced ? Did we need that sorry excuse for "bullet-time" as we saw so beautifully executed in The Matrix, no, we don't. The fights, with the exception of the finale, were honestly boring or too over-the-top to be fun.

If you want to see an entertaing wire-work film, look at Iron Monkey or from Jet Li, The Legend 1 and or the ONCE UPON in CHINA trilogy. For a more genuine style Jet Li film , see Fist of Legend or The Enforcer. Even last summer's Kiss of the Dragon, was a much more entertaining and much more of a Jet Li vehicle.

I mean, why do we go see Jet Li ? Because he's unique in his style of action he brings to this genre of film and his portrayal of his characters, are why we ask for more.

But I wasn't asking for this, this ONE at least, can I ask for something else instead ?
