'The Replacements' Every Football Movie Ever Made Squeezed into 114 minuets.
If you ask me if "The Replacements" is a good movie, I would say no. If you ask me if I had fun watching it I would say yes. This movie is one of those films that steals just about every line and every scene from other movies we have all scene before. Keanu Reeves stars as Shane Falco a movie name as good as his in "Point Break" which was Johnny Utah. Let me set the scene, it is twelve games into the National Football Leagues season and with four remaining games the highly paid players are going on strike. The Washington Sentinels are two wins away from the playoffs and need to field a team of players that will cross the picket line. These "scab players" are brought together by "scab coach" Gene Hackman. He recruits a band of misfits and his key find is Falco to play quarterback and lead the team. Falco was a star in college but lost the Sugar Bowl in a blow out and never made it in the pro's. The team also had to get a group of "scab cheerleaders" who turn out to be a group of strippers, the movie gets a lot of play out of the women dancing suggestively on the sideline. The head cheerleader is played by Brooke Langton and of course has the rule that she never dates players. The team must band together and learn to trust each other to make the playoffs and win the big game. So we have the old coach looking for redemption, a group of players looking for a second chance, a star quarterback looking for his claim to fame and the cheerleader love interest. For all of the clichés in this movie, you get a ton of laughs. The makers knew that if they played it at all serious that the movie would fall apart so they just went with it and had a good time. If you are looking for a serious football film than go a rent "Any Given Sunday", if you want to have a good mindless evening at the theater than go see "The Replacements" |
