"U-571" Bring a wetsuit.

By Ted Pfeifer

You do not just sit and watch "U-571" you experience it. You feel it. You live it. This is old school filmmaking. Jonathan Mostow, who directed the Kurt Russell thriller "Breakdown", brings another fantastic film to the screen.

Although there is controversy over the movie, people in England are upset because it was actually British sailors that took over a U Boat, the makers want you to understand that this is not a true story.

Matthew McConaughey stars as Lt. Andrew Tyler who is waiting for his chance to be the Captain of his own ship. He gets the chance as the mission to get aboard a German U Boat to steal an encoding device called the enigma goes haywire. This film starts out strong and grows more intense as it moves along.

During the scenes in which depth charges are sent down to locate the sub, no one on screen is moving as they await their fate, and no one in the theater is moving either. The sound is deafening and it appears as though that is what it must have been really like in WWII. I can picture this film in black and white and it would have been just as movies were made back in the good old days. Mostow lets you feel like you are part of the crew. He doesn't get caught up in throwing in cliches.

The film also stars Harvey Keitel, Bill Paxton and Jon Bon Jovi. It looks like the first Summer blockbuster arrived early this year. "U-571" is great.
