"Urban Legend
II "
Well it has
happened yet again. Somebody came up with a good idea on paper. Then tried
to make it into a screenplay. Then someone tried to make a movie, and
all was lost. "Urban Legends 2" falls apart the moment it starts.
It is not a sequel to the first, which by the way was not a bad film,
but it makes mention to the first as though the killings in the original
were just an urban legend as well. Loretta Devine reprises her campus
cop role but she is the only carry over. What we have is college kids
in film school trying to make movies so they can win the Hitchcock award
for best student film, which by the way almost guarantees the winner a
directing job in Hollywood.
Can you guess where it goes from here? You were right, someone starts
killing people off and it all centers around a project that involves urban
legends. The problem here is that as in the first film the writer realized
that there just are not that many urban legends to go around. There is
one well known legend that they use here and it is done quite well. But
it has nothing to do with the rest of the movie and that's bad because
that was the most compelling part of the film. The time has come that
instead of having all of these "teen slasher" filcks, Hollywood needs
to take these good ideas and make "teen thrillers" like, "Final Destination"
and "The Skulls".
Those two
movies took good ideas and made them enjoyable, though they were not great
films, they were at least very enjoyable. Go to the theater early to get
your ticket for "Urban Legends 2" because you will have to wait in line
behind all the people going to see "The Exorcist".
