"X-Men"
95 minutes of special effects, rubber suits, and misunderstood people.
The "X-Men"
delivers the goods for what it is. It's just a super-hero movie. A bunch
of misunderstood people who have special powers that wear tight rubber/leather
outfits.
I must start off by saying that I have never read a X-Men comic and do
not really know anything about them, so I will not be making any comments
about how it does or does not stay true to the comic. I will instead say
that although it was way too long, the effects were very good and the
directing was done well. Bryan Singer who also directed the fantastic
"Usual Suspects" takes his first shot at a big budget summer blockbuster
and does a fine job. His directing and story telling are closer to the
Tim Burton "Batman" and less like the Joel Schumacher versions of the
Dark Knight.
The cast is fine with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Anna Paquin as Rogue.
Halle Berry, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and James Masdsen combine for about
twenty lines of dialogue. So this film is basically Jackman's to win or
lose with. He wins. Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart play friends who
are alike as they are both mutants, but they are not alike in their beliefs.
The story is McKellen who plays Magneto believes that humans will try
to track down all of the mutants and place them in concentration camps,
much like Magneto was in while he was a child. Stewart wants to believe
that the humans will learn o live with the mutants. And the battle begins.
For a movie that packs a ton of special effects and some good one-liners
this truly delivers, but the script has some weak points and it carries
on too long. With that said, expect to see a sequel in a couple of years.
